More a collection of stories with one longer storyline connecting all the stories together than one long story. A nice concept. However, I was not really charmed by the "conversations" between Elminster and Nergal, which took place in Elminster's mind. The spell battle to free Elminster from the clutches of Nergal at the end of the book though, is epic and fantastic. All in all a nice book. Of course, a must-read for those addicted to Greenwood's Elminster books.
